International Committee Meeting, Colorado Springs, Colorado, October 2nd 2009 Approval of the minutes of European Committee Meetings of July 1 2008, Sept 19 2008 & Sept 10 2009. Minutes distributed, read and duly approved. European Paint Horse Championships Carl Thurow gave an update on the 2008 European Championships. Entries also increased on previous year. The show is experiencing strong growth and rising interest. There was some interest in the introduction into the APHA rule book of Performance Halter. European horses still compete in a variety of events rather than specialize. Tammy Botsford explained that to be eligible for a show High Point Award a horse must compete in halter and there is a strong interest in Performance Halter classes in Canada as well. Chico Garcia explained that Brazil will hold a “Complete Horse” competition – with halter and 4 or 5 performance events, so Performance Halter may be of interest in Brazil. Lee Ann Hall told that Performance Halter events are already held by the NPHA Shows in Australia, not yet in Paint shows. General discussion on European Championships and activities. Lex Smurthwaite gave an update on the 2009 European Championships. Dates for 2010 Show August 30 – Sept 4 2010. Youth World Games Discussion on the 2010 Youth World Games, in particular the difficulty in obtaining suitable horses. Lee Ann Hall explained that some of the Youth Committee Directors had discussions with Jeffrey & Lee Ann Hall regarding the 2010 YWG and ways to improve. Many ideas were put on the table and most had merit. Changing the scheduling of YWG classes, group clinics for YWG competitors, clothing / uniforms and stall decorating competition were covered. Additional topics Judges Seminar in Europe April / May 2010 will be Paint / Appaloosa combined. APHA website discussed and digital version of Connections. Chico Garcia would like to see an International page on apha.com with links to other countries and an exchange of information. Also the availability of APHA forms to download in other languages. Lex Smurthwaite gave an update on USLGE, Lex is now a Director of USLGE representing equine. Other representation is for dairy, beef, swine and genetics. Clubs are encouraged to submit their requests for APHA financial support (USLGE funds) for 2011 before Dec 31 2009. These requests must be specific, detailed and in writing. Chico Garcia gave an update on Brazil Paint Horse Assn. Currently 15-16,000 horses registered, preferred method of selling is by auction giving up to 24 months to pay, Brazil Assn holds papers until paid. Most horses sold do not return to the show ring, suggest that APHA attend a show or out to other areas in Brazil with a booth to follow up on new memberships. Promotional material from APHA would be beneficial. Quarter Horses very strong in Brazil, Brazil Government will not allow double registration of horses. Discussion on Brazil holding an “All American” Show, similar to the one held in Australia earlier this year. Lex Smurthwaite gave an update on Mexico. Figures discussed and the value of registration papers to Mexican owners. APHA have visited Mexico twice to handle paperwork on site. There is now an official APHA club in Mexico. Lee Ann Hall gave a brief update on Australia and tabled a report with statistics. First All American show held this year, to be expanded next year and the possibility of an All American Congress in 2011. Tammy Botsford gave an update on Canada. Show entries have been up and clubs are going well. The Alberta Club is involved in a exposition type event “The Mane Event”, held every year with clinics, challenges, gift show etc. 3 arenas used and held over 3 days. Canada have been experiencing problems importing semen due to CEM. The meeting was adjourned at 6 p.m. ------------------------------
